    Escheatment

    Millions of rebate checks are sent to requestors annually, yet many remain un-cashed after the expiration date. What happens to all those un-cashed rebate checks? Different laws in every state govern how to manage these checks. KBM Group helps its clients handle this important, yet often confusing, function called escheatment.

    Escheatment is the process of turning over unclaimed property (i.e., those un-cashed rebate checks) to a state authority. Organizations are required to submit this unclaimed property to the states in accordance with the state laws of the payee’s residence. The laws differ from state to state for reporting, holding periods, due diligence requirements, type of property, etc.
